Mock Interviews at Maroochydore and Burnside

Alex Rotary continues with youth schools support through Maroochydore SHS Mock Interviews

On Thursday this week, we need YOU to join with Alex Rotary and help out the amazing kids at Maroochy State High School with teh preparations for joining the workforce.

It will take a half day out of your life and you'll be helping kids with your listening and mentoring skills. The school is super - organised, having polished up teh process over may years, so you'll have a run sheet and score card and guidance on what to look for and advise the kids.

If you can spare Thursday morning this week (28th) then give Tony Freeman a ring on 0412373381 and we'll take it from there.

Last years wrap up with the team.

Late News: Burnside School have also reached out for a Mock Interview and Resume workshops for grade 9's on 1st and 2nd August

The Burnside State High School have asked Rotary of we can help their grade 9's with organising some resume writing and mock interviews, So we met with Steve and Laura and have plans to 6 x 1 hour workshops with each of the grade 9 classes on 1st & 2nd August.

Again, if you are interested please let Tony or John know.

Friday's meeting ...back to  ZOOM

This is what Friday's meeting looked like, as we went back to zoom for one week only. Turned out be be a great idea as weather was lousy anyway. We're on again this Friday at Alex SLSC..

The Usual Suspect comes to mind.

Unfortunately the technology sometimes conspires to defeat us, but in this case (apart from an interesting interaction with Angela and a Temple in the USA (??) , and a preponderance of wild animals (??), it all went off without a hitch.

A certain scribe took advantage of the platform to provide a short introduction to the IT platform that the club runs on...you can see the stunned looks on his audience above. laugh

Other Youth Programs (RYLA, RYDA, NYSF)

The acronyms above refer to leadership, driving, and science programs that Alex Rotary supports, and delighted to say its all going rather well, with candidates for schools coming forward for some amazing Rotary arranged experiences.

A special mention to our mate Geoff, who not only went along to help with the RYDA program at Nambour, (an amazing program that saves young drivers lives every year) but Geoff ended up becoming the organiser for future RYDA programs. Well done Geoff, and special mention to Wendy who dobbed Geoff in, in true presidential style.

...and this is the good work that Geoff is helping out with from a recent RYDA program...

RYDA (Youth Driver Awareness) is designed for 16-18 year old students who are approaching that crucial time in their lives where they start to drive independently or are travelling as passengers of one of their peers.

It is a series of practical workshops that aim to change the way young people think about road safety. As part of an interactive one-day experience, students experience braking at different speeds, devise travel strategies that will work in the real world and get tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends & their family.

Perhaps the most powerful moments come from the personal stories of loss & survival.

In one session, students watch a powerful & emotional video on the life & tragic death of an 18 year old provisional driver & in another, they sit with a crash survivor & hear first-hand how one poor choice can change a life forever.

Welcome new President Skye

Youngest ever President of Rotary Club of Alex Headland

Well its official, the women have finally officially taken over.

Of course the more observant of us already knew that they were always in charge.  But usually women were in the background, doing the hard yards, men up the front grabbing all teh limelight. Th natural order of things. (not!)

But now, as we can see from the photo, we have a new President Skye, and Past President Wendy, and of course new International Rotary President Jennifer Jones. Not forgetting our very hard working local member, and past Rotary Youth exchange student Fiona Simpson in the pic below.

Welcome all.

Ful credit and acknowledgement to the great work that past President Wendy oversaw in her years guiding the club, and many thanks from all the grateful members.

..and finally these were the REAL STARS of the night........ the amazing Cohen and Olivia........ together with mum and dad...Anthony -  our amazing club sponsor and supporter,  and President Skye.

We're walking for Polio - New Flyer

Big Thanks to Mark S for the new polio walk flyer....

The Rotary club of Alexandra Headland would greatly appreciate it if all Adult participants register their interest online to attend the walk with their young costumed pirates and others.

Shelterbox

We were delighted that Peter Morley from Kippa Ring Rotary was able to join us at the Solstice Swim and put up a display of "Shelterbox" at the swim to show whats in Shelterbox and where the boxes are sent by donators around the world.

Thank you Peter. The club is delighted to donate $1,000 for one box that contains all the necessities that folks with nothing but the clothes on their backs need.

Wanderlust - not to be missed

Wanderlust - an amazing Food & Drink festival in support of Oz Harvest

The amazing folks at Maroochydore State High School are inviting everyone to attend the amazing Wanderlust festival that celebrates the variety of Sunshine Coast food and drink produced here on the coast, and its all in aid of that fantastic Oz Harvest organisation, who have done an amazing job during the pandemic in keeping food on the table for so many folks who have been "doing it tough".

Also when a certain scribe and his mate were at the Vocational Enterprise Regional Group meeting we heard how the school went over the past few years. You can see from teh slide below the impact of COVID on placement of kids in the workplace but also what a brilliant job the school has been doing in developing future academic and non academic student at Maroochy High during this very difficult time.
